Forest Lakes
Often times those living in the Phoenix Valley ponder this single critical question: What is the absolute closest place I could buy or build a cabin that is at a high elevation, in a forest, and has access to raw wilderness and great mountain lakes that would allow me to fish, kayak and even canoe? The answer is Forest Lakes, Arizona.
Forest Lakes is the first community one arrives at on their journey to the top of the magnificent Mogollon Rim in Arizona. After a crazy steep climb to the top of the rim along the highway 260 reaching all the way to over 7,500 feet and entering what seems like a whole new world and especially climate, forest lakes is there to receive those same weary travelers. With only roughly 200 year round residents it is definitely a seasonal community yet it still has history being settled all the way back in 1939. Gorgeous cabins have been erected in this small community which is estimated to be around roughly 2 square miles. From those 2 square miles are vast untouched wilderness filled with Elk, Deer, Bear and all other manner of creatures and wildlife.
Even sitting up high on the Rim with a lower temperature climate than the near settlements of Payson under the Rim and especially Phoenix, it still has its challenges with the weather. Every year, from mainly July and August but sometimes earlier and sometimes longer large storms head due north from down south off the coast of Mexico. These super storms are called the monsoons and they are a force to reckon with especially for settlements right on top of the rim. As the storm heads north it slams into the Mogollon Rim and builds up and gains steam until the pressure builds and it goes over the top drenching those settlements closest to the actual rim with moisture. This means each year, dozens if not more cabins and residents get flooded with rain. A flood can be remediated quickly preventing the mold that comes after and saving a lot of different types of wood.
